Opera and music theatre on new terms.
SHANGHAI is the result of a collaboration between the Göteborg Opera and ShareMusic & Performing Arts. Artists from both ensembles contribute both on stage and in the artistic process behind the performance. The collaboration, which began in 2014, is based on the idea that people express themselves in different ways and that there is value in artistic diversity.
SHANGHAI is a story about breaking free and forging your own path. It is about ordinary people living ordinary lives. Feeling the stress of everyday problems, their fears for the future, all the while dreaming dreams lled with longing for something else. They begin to wonder who truly controls their lives. It seems as though someone other than themselves is governing how they should behave. A struggle begins. The struggle to become masters of their own lives.
Entertaining and thought-provoking, SHANGHAI elevates human voices and abilities in a groundbreaking dramatic experience that differs from anything we have ever heard before.
World premiere 7 April 2017
The Skövde Stage, Skövde, Sweden.
